October 26- October 29.

Welcome! We have a short week this week with no school on Friday! It’s Spirit Week so let’s have some fun!

Monday- Paw Print Day! **Reminder, tutoring until 4:30 PM.

Today we will explore what realistic fiction is and hear a short passage from a realistic fiction text. We will listen to the poem and think about the theme. We will also continue to work on personal narratives which we will finish this week. In Social Studies, we will explore English Settlements and compare them to Spanish settlements. We will continue to practice multiplication and do some math test corrections. In Science, we will talk about severe weather.

Homework: Math Additional Practice Book and Read 15 minutes and log it.

Tuesday- Pink Day!

Today we will get into our weekly reading of “Hatchet”. We will spend the morning reading our text and diving right into answering our questions. We will conference with the teacher about our writing so we can prepare for revisions. In Social Studies, we will finish exploring English settlements and describe the tensions between settlers and natives. In Math, we will work on multiplication with word problems. In Science, we will begin a book on Epic about 12 Severe weather incidents.

Homework: Math Additional Practice Book and Read 15 minutes and log it.

Wednesday– Heritage Day! **Reminder, Early Release at 1:30**

In Language Arts today, we will dive back into “Hatchet” and discuss how Brian was feeling and the point of view of the story using graphic organizers. We will finish up writing conferences and continue to make edits of our personal narrative, making sure they are almost ready to publish! In Math, we will practice multiplication of multi-digit numbers and word problems for our last multiplication quiz on Thursday.

Thursday! Class Color Day! We are ORANGE! **Reminder, tutoring until 4:30 PM!**

This will be our last day of the week! We will do some more work with “Hatchet” and discuss how we enjoyed realistic fiction and what characteristics we noticed. We will peer edit our personal narratives before publishing our first 5th grade essay! In Social Studies, we will do a short activity about both English and Spanish settlements in the early Americas. We will take our quick multiplication quiz in math and end the day with Science! In Science, we will finish reading about severe weather examples!

Week of October 19-23.

Monday! **Reminder- Tutoring until 4:30

Happy Monday! I am excited to start the week with our 5th Grade class. We will be working on a lot of different topics this week! We will take our Growth Monitoring on iReady. In Language Arts, we will finish drafting our body paragraphs for our personal narrative. We will listen to an informational text and talk more about informational text characteristics. In Social Studies, we will listen to our classmates continue presenting about Hispanic Americans. In Math, we will work on multiplication, but this time do 3 digit by 2 digit problems. In Science, we will learn about how location and land effects weather and climate.

Homework: Math Additional Practice & Read 15 minutes and log it.

Tuesday! We will start to read our weekly text “A Place for Frogs” and learn about frog’s habitats. We will write the closings for our personal narrative essays. We will also work on learning our new vocabulary words. In Social Studies, we will wrap up presentations before moving into our new chapter about settlements in North America. In math, we will learn the standard algorithm for multiplication and practice our skills. In Science, we will end the day by talking about different climate. We will understand the difference between climate and weather.

Wednesday- **Reminder! Early Release @ 1:30!

We will continue to work hard on both our essays and our weekly text in Language Arts. We will revisit learning about text structure and think about the text structure of “A Place for Frogs”. We will fill out a graphic organizer using text evidence from the text. In Math, we will review everything we have learned about multiplication. We will end the day with Health where we will talk about social emotional learning.

Thursday! **Reminder tutoring until 4:30 PM today!

We will continue to explore our text in reading, but this time we will monitor our own understanding about what we are reading. We will respond to our text by annotating it and rereading. We will share out our ideas with our class. We will revisit figurative languages by reviewing metaphors and similes and also learning personification. We will use what we learned to go back into our writing and see if we can add figurative language. In Social Studies, we will start exploring our new chapter and learn about Spanish colonies in the Americas. In Math, we will take a math test! We will end the day with Science where we will talk about natural disasters.

Friday! Yay!
**Reading test and Science Test.

Happy Friday! We will get some time reading Wonder as a Friday treat. We will think about the negative and positive effects on frogs that we learned about through our weekly reading. We will also start to revise our writing to add transitional phrasing to be more organized. We will look at more colonies in Social Studies, but this time the English Colonies that were settled in Virginia. In Math, we will get more practice with multiplication and take a quiz. We will end the day with our Science test before sharing a little about our weekends.

Week of October 13-October 16.

Welcome back from the long weekend! It is so exciting that we are already in Quarter 2 of the school year. 5th grade is flying right by!

Monday- ENJOY YOUR EXTRA DAY OFF. I will see you all Tuesday when you return!

Tuesday- We will be starting our week off! In Reading, we will be exploring yet another informational text. We will be moving into our new unit which will be all about observations. In writing, we will be drafting the introductions for our personal narrative. In Social Studies, we will continue with our projects about Hispanic Heritage month. In Math, we will start a new unit as well! This unit will be focused on multiplication! Today, we will focus on multiplying by the number 10. In Science, we will start to wonder about the next topic we will be learning about, Weather and Climate. We will start to explore this topic today as well!

Wednesday- **Reminder** Early Release!

This Wednesday, we will be busy with reading, math, and writing! In Reading, we will explore our weekly text “Far From Shore” and do some classwork about our reading. We will continue to draft our personal narratives, but this time thinking about our body paragraphs. We will work on fixing the comments Ms. Zaremski left on our work to improve! In Math, we will get some iReady time before talking about multiplication. We will practice working with 1 digit numbers. In Health, we will talk about our feelings and how the connect to our learning.

Thursday- **Reminder** Tutoring until 4:30 PM!

Thursday, we will be busy learning! We will start to practice using our new vocabulary words and see how they are used in our informational text. We will continue to draft more body paragraphs, but think about adding details to our work. We will also get some iReady time in the morning. In Social Studies, we will start to organize and plan our presentation on the Hispanic person we have been researching. In Math, we will start to multiply with even bigger numbers using different strategies. In Science, we will start to think about the weather and how there are different types of precipitation. We will explore these different types to learn more!

Friday! I have a feeling this week will go quick.

This Friday, we will continue exploring our topics. We will of course get our Friday time of reading Wonder as a class to continue seeing how August is coping with starting 5th grade in a real school for the first time. We will think about author’s purpose and discuss how author’s of informational text write their works. We will be busy writers finishing up the last of our body paragraphs for our personal narrative. In Social Studies, we will present about the person we learned and researched about. In Math, we will be working with even bigger numbers, getting better and better at multiplication! We will also practice on iReady. We will end the week with a Science lesson about different weather patterns and different places!

Week of 10/5-10/9!

Hi, class! I am excited for another great week of learning together.

Monday- We will open up the week by talking about the topics we will explore this week. In Language Arts, we will focus on text structure in informational texts. We will also begin writing our first essay, a personal narrative. In Social Studies, we will continue to talk about Hispanic influences and their impacts. In Math, we will focus on subtracting decimals using place value blocks to help us! Science, we will start to discuss Earth’s freshwater.

Tuesday- In Language Arts, we will begin read our weekly text about different famous artists. We will spend a good amount of time reading and talking about what we learned from the text. We will continue to talk about our personal narratives and what we could write about. In Social Studies, we will continue to honor Hispanic Heritage month and talk about different aspects of different Hispanic cultures. In math, we will learn strategies to help add decimals and get some iReady time. In Science, we will start to look at Earth’s oceans.

Wednesday- *Reminder Early Release at 1:30.

In Language Arts, we will continue to look at our weekly story and start to answer some questions about if we understood what we read. We will start to talk about prefixes. We will also start to write our personal narrative in writing! In Math, we will learn strategies to subtract decimals. In Health, we will continue talking about Social Emotional learning and what it means to be aware of how we feels.

Thursday- In Language Arts, we will get more practice with text structure, review our weekly reading, and talk about creating tones and moods in personal narrative writing. We will practice with our vocabulary words and review for Friday’s reading quiz. In Social Studies, we will talk about Sonia Sotomayor by reading a book and watching a short video. In Math, we will review adding and subtracting decimals to practice for our quiz on Friday. We will also be reviewing in Science for a test about Earth’s water.

Friday- To wrap up our week, we will be taking tests in a lot of our subjects! In reading, we will take our reading quiz and recap what we learned this week. We will get some read aloud time of “Wonder” to celebrate all the hard work we did all week. In Social Studies, we will talk about Cesar Chavez. We will be able to connect what we learned about Dolores Huerta to what we find out about Cesar Chavez. In Math, we will take our Math quiz and get some iReady Math lesson time. To end the day, we will take our Science test!
