Week of September 28-October 2

I can’t believe we are wrapping up September in 5th grade. We have a busy week ahead of us.

Monday- We will be busy diving into the new topics that we are learning in our different subjects. In Language Arts, we will be reading poetry this week. We will learn about elements of poetry such as figurative language and rhyming. We will start to practice adding suffixes to different words. In Social Studies, we will start to explore Hispanic Heritage month. In Math, we will finish taking our IXL diagnostic, get some iReady lesson time, and do a decimal review worksheet. Science will bring an exciting new topic about Earth’s water. For Monday, we will look into Earth’s Water Cycle.

Homework: Math Worksheet & Read 15 minutes and log it. *Reminder- Tutoring until 4:30 PM.

Tuesday- We will start reading a collection of poems and discuss our takeaways from these poems. We will review what theme is and start to think about the themes in our poetry collection. We will continue to work with suffixes as well. We will do a class read aloud of a book that represents Hispanic Heritage month in Social Studies. In math, we will begin a new unit of addition and subtraction with decimals. We will start to look at the Earth’s freshwater in Science to end the day!

Homework: Math Worksheet & Read 15 minutes and log it.

Wednesday- *Reminder Early Release* In Language Arts we will continue to work with our poetry collection. We will identify the figurative language and sound devices in the poems we started to read. We will also begin talking about prefixes. In Math, we will use models to practice addition and subtraction of decimals. To end the day with our Health lesson, we will discuss the benefits of creating happiness in areas of your life.

Homework: Math Worksheet & Read 15 minutes and log it.

Thursday- Our knowledge of poetry will continue to grow as we practice visualizing when we read poetry. We will read a bit of our class read aloud “Wonder” and get some iReady Reading Lesson time. We will also still continue to practice prefixes. In Social Studies, we will start exploring influential Hispanic figures in history in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. In math, we will start to learn strategies to help us add decimals. In Math, we will estimate decimal sums and differences. In Science, we will start to learn about Earth’s oceans.

Friday- Happy Friday! We will spend a lot of our day showing what we know from all of our lessons this week. In reading, we will take a quiz on prefix and suffixes and do an activity with rhyming and figurative language. We will explore yet another influential Hispanic figure in Social Studies. Math time will be spent adding decimals and practicing skills on IXL. In Science, we will take a quiz about the water cycle.

Week of September 21-25

Another week of school is ahead of us and I can’t wait! We have quite the week to look forward to.

Monday- In reading workshop, we will continue to explore how journeys change people. This week, we will read historical fiction so today we will learn what it means for a text to be historical fiction. We will review story elements like setting and character. In Social Studies, we will continue talking about the exploration age. We will learn the importance of The Columbian Exchange. In Math, we will practice rounding decimals again. We will also get some iReady lesson time. To end the day, we will focus on learning about the outer planets in our solar system. We will also learn about the project we will be doing this week.

MONDAY: Rounding Decimals Homework & Read 15 minutes

Tuesday- In reading workshop, we will begin to read our weekly story “Pedro’s Journal”. We will read through his journal and continue talking about characteristics of historical fiction. In Social Studies, we will finish talking about The Columbian Exchange and review the key facts from our lesson. In math, we will review for our math test coming up on Wednesday. In Science, we will finish up talking about the outer planets and their characteristics.

TUESDAY: Study for Math test & Read 15 minutes.

Wednesday- Reminder** Early release today! In reading workshop, we will continue to explore our weekly reading through a class discussion about the characters and by answering reading comprehension questions. In math, we will take our Unit 1 test and get some iReady Math lesson time. This week in health, we will talk about the benefits of supporting others.

WEDNESDAY: Finish Reading Workshop Questions.

Thursday- In reading workshop, we will make inferences using our own knowledge and everything we have discovered this week from the text. In Social Studies, we will start to review the Age of Exploration to prepare for our test on Friday. We will begin our new unit in math by refreshing our strategies for addition and subtraction to prepare to start adding and subtracting decimals. Science, we will spend time reviewing for the test about the solar system we will be taking on Friday.

THURSDAY: Study for Social Studies & Science Test. Science project due tomorrow!

Friday- We will end the week by having a test day to tie up some of the topics we have been working on. We will have a reading workshop quiz and open ended question to answer to show what we learned from this week’s text. In Social Studies, we will take our test on the Age of Exploration. In Math, we will begin to estimate the sums and differences of decimals. We will end the week by taking our Science Test and starting to share our Science Project.

Week of September 14-18

I hope everyone had a great weekend! I am looking forward to a full week of learning together!


Monday- Today we will keep talking about informational text. We will listen to a read aloud and explore different text features. We will preview our new Social Studies chapter about exploration. In math, we will continue to learn about decimals. We will end the day by playing a Matter Jeopardy!

HOMEWORK: Read 15 minutes and log it, Study for science!

Tuesday- We will start our weekly reading and practice using our vocabulary words and answering reading questions. We will begin to look at the first lesson in our new Social Studies unit. We will start comparing decimals and will end the day with our Science Test!

Tuesday Homework: TUESDAY: Math Homework (Savvas), Read 15 minutes and log it, 10 spelling sentences.

Wednesday- We will continue to explore our weekly reading by analyzing text features and continue to talk about the six traits of writing in ELA. In Math, we will begin to round with decimals. In health, we will talk about the benefits of positive self-talk and positive affirmations.

Wednesday Homework: WEDNESDAY: Math Homework (Savvas), Read 15 minutes and log it.

Thursday- We will close read our weekly informational text again to start making inferences using our background knowledge and clues from the text. In Math, we will continue working with decimals by rounding. In Social Studies, we will start to talk about Spain Explorers. In Science, we will start to preview our next unit about space.

Thursday Homework: THURSDAY: Math Homework (Savvas), Read 15 minutes and log it. Study for math quiz tomorrow!

Friday- We will wrap up learning about our informational texts by discussing some of the takeaways we learned and making inferences. We will practice writing conventions like capitalization and punctuation! In Social Studies, we will start to talk about The Colombian Exchange. We will take a math quiz. In Science, we will start to look at parts of a galaxy.

Week of September 8-11!

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day Weekend! We are back and ready to learn. This week will be busy!

Tuesday- We will continue to learn about what it means to be a “paper son” by close reading “Louie Share Kim, Paper Son” & “The Path to Paper Son”. We will practice finding text evidence to support our ideas. We will also set writing goals for the year. In math, we will discuss exponents and powers of ten! We finished our Social Studies unit on Friday so we will review Tuesday! In Science, we will continue to talk about physical changes of matter.

Wednesday- We will continue to learn about what it means to be a “paper son” by comparing our two texts “Louie Share Kim, Paper Son” & “The Path to Paper Son”. We will review what it means to write with a clear, focused idea. In Health, we will talk about the benefits of positive self-talk. We will start to review decimals in math too!

Wednesday Homework: Math Worksheet

Thursday- We will spend time reading an article of informational text that talks about litter on the beaches. In writing, we will review what makes an essay organized and review different genres of writing. Our Social Studies assessment will be on Thursday as well! In Science, we will talk about chemical changes of matter. In math, we will continue to talk about decimals and review place value of decimal places.

Thursday Homework: Read for 20 minutes and Math Worksheet.

Friday- We will continue to discuss informational texts through talking about the “Garbage Patch article”. We will also review text features and text structure. In writing, we will discuss what it means to have a personal writing voice. We will preview our next Social Studies unit about exploration. In math, we will use what we learned this week about decimal place value to compare decimals. In Science, we will continue to explore matter by looking at mixtures and solutions.
